Jaime A. Alvarez, M.D. received both a chemistry and biology degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa where he made the Dean’s List every year of his college career. He earned his medical degree from the State University of New York College of Medicine in Syracuse, New York. During medical school, he was awarded the McGraw-Hill Award for high class ranking and a National Deans List nominee.
Following medical school, Dr. Alvarez did his general surgery internship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he also performed his neurological surgery residency, and underwent specialized training in neuroendoscopy and stereotactic neurosurgery.
Dr. Alvarez, Board Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, joined Southwest Florida Neurosurgical Associates in 1999. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Spine Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the North American Spine Society.
Fluent in English and Spanish, Dr. Alvarez has written numerous abstracts and research papers in the treatment of various brain and nervous system disorders.
His special interests at Southwest Florida Neurosurgical Associates include the treatment of brain tumors, cerebral aneurysms, carotid stenosis, trauma to both the brain and spine, surgery for degenerative spine problems, spinal instrumentation, trigeminal neuralgia and carpal tunnel disease.
Dr. Alvarez also specializes in minimally invasive procedures such as kyphoplasty for vertebral fractures, x-stop device implantation for spinal stenosis and motion preservation techniques such as artificial cervical disc implantation.
